“Uttarakhand Leads the Way: First State to Integrate 20 Fruit and Vegetable Markets into the E-National Agricultural Market”
In a significant milestone, Uttarakhand has emerged as the first state in the country to integrate 20 of its fruit and vegetable markets into the E-National Agricultural Market (E-NAM). This move comes as part of the Central government’s E-NAM initiative, launched in 2017, aimed at providing basic infrastructure and facilities for the development and management of connected markets, offering a financial incentive of ₹70 lakh.
The E-NAM initiative, introduced in 2017 by the Central government, seeks to ensure fair pricing for farmers and eliminate the role of middlemen in the agricultural supply chain. The connected markets receive essential facilities and development support, including internet lease lines, computerization, testing labs, auction halls, and more.
Through the E-NAM scheme, farmers can auction their produce online to buyers in any market across the country. The markets are equipped with testing labs to assess the quality of products. In 2017, five markets in Uttarakhand, including Haridwar, Kashipur, Kichha, Sitarganj, and Gadarpur, were initially included in the E-NAM scheme. Subsequently, in 2018, an additional 11 markets, including Bhagwanpur, Laksar, Kotdwar, and Manglaur, joined the initiative.
Vijay Thapliyal, Deputy General Manager of the Uttarakhand Agricultural Production and Marketing Board, highlighted that the state currently operates a total of 23 fruit and vegetable markets. Out of these, 20 are now seamlessly integrated into the E-NAM platform, marking Uttarakhand as the pioneer state in this transformative agricultural initiative. A total of 9,000 farmers and 5,455 traders have been registered under the E-NAM scheme in Uttarakhand, conducting business worth ₹128 crores, with digital transactions playing a key role.
